Powering Africa's Potential
Project Prometheus Overview
-
Project Prometheus is a prospective project partnering K.E.E.F. with the Kisumu government to tackle Kisumu's garbage crisis with community engagement and outside grant funding
-
Problem: In its most recent assessment, the Kisumu Integrated Solid Waste Management Plan estimates that around 75% of solid waste in the city goes uncollected, “Resultant effects include spread of infectious diseases, blocked sewers, litter in the streets and pollution of Lake Victoria through crude dumping.”(KISWaMP, 2018).
-
Solution: Decentralized Integrated Solid Waste Management (ISWM) focused on school-based small-scale incineration (for inorganic waste) and biogas/compost generation via biogas digesters (for organic waste), and community pickup of solid waste.
-
Project Overview:
-
Establish a decentralized system of ISWM centered around schools and surrounding communities by pairing small-scale incinerators with biogas digesters, which convert organic waste into fertilizer and clean cooking fuel for use by each school
-
The incinerator and biogas digester would be located at the schools but would provide solid waste disposal for both the school and surrounding community
-
Work with local communities (with a focus on slums/vulnerable populations) to establish sustainable/inclusive methods for solid waste collection, free of charge
-
Fund the project through small donors (at first) and then through grants from a variety of larger international development banks/NGOs/government organizations
